Course Objectives:

  •         To introduce the fundamental various types of computer networks
  •         To demonstrate the TCP/IP and OSI models with merits and demerits
  •         To explore the various layers of the OSI model
  •         To introduce the UDP and TCP models

UNIT - I
Overview of the Internet – Protocol, layering scenario, TCP/IP Protocol Suite: The OSI Model, Internet history standards and administrations, Comparisons of the OSI and TCP/IP Reference Model Physical Layer – Guided transmission media, wireless transmission media, Data Dink Layer-design issues, CRC Codes, Elementary data link layer protocols, Sliding window protocol
UNIT - II
Multiple Access Protocol - ALOHA, CSMA, Collision-free protocols, Ethernet- Physical Layer, Ethernet MAC Sublayer, Data Link Layer Switching & use of bridges, learning bridges, spanning tree bridges, repeaters, hubs, bridges, switches, routers, and gateways
UNIT - III
Network Layer –Network Layer Design issues, Store and forward packet switching, connectionless and connection-oriented networks, Routing algorithms- optimality principles, shortest path, flooding, Distance vector routing, count to infinity problems, Hierarchical routing, Congestion control algorithms, Admission control
UNIT - IV
Internetworking– Tunneling, Internetwork routing, Packet fragmentation, IPv4, IPv6 protocol, IP addresses, CIDR, IMCP, ARP, RARP, DHCP, Transport layer-services provided to the upper layer elements of transport protocol, connection establishment, connection release, crash recovery
UNIT – V
The internet transport protocol UDP, Real-time transport protocols-RPC, The internet transport protocols-introduction to TCP, The TCP services model, The TCP segment header, the connection establishment, The TCP connection release, The TCP connection modeling, the TCP sliding window, The TCP congestion control, the future of TCP,
Application layer-Introduction, proving services, Application layer paradigm, client-server model, standard client-server applications- HTTP, FTP, electronic mail, TELNET, DNS, SSH
